22/365: all ash, all day

January 22nd, 2011 in Daily

Eruptions on the hour today. Since I stepped out around 9AM, huge plumes of ash bound for Osumi were visible drifting over the mountains. Morning to mid-day, these were headed towards the Kushira / Shibushi area (above). After waking up from a nap in the afternoon, I saw another huge wave floating over the mountains from my kitchen window.

The ominous cloud blocked out the sunlight for two or three minutes.

Across the parking lot at pachinko…

… headed for points south before hitting a low-pressure system and dropping out of the sky.

Thinking the coast was clear after the main cloud passed, the tail end of it fell on my neighborhood while I was walking home. Not fun cleaning that stuff out of your hair and ears, let alone camera gear. I think my 50mm f/1.4 has seen better days…
